NOTES:

In 1939 the Esso Oil Company issued the Esso Baseball Handbook, 1839-1939 Baseball's 100th Anniversary Edition. The free premium was made available at your local Esso station. A blank space at the bottom of the cover was reserved for the station's advertisement. This book was issued by "Macaluso's Esso Servicenter, Franklin & Vreeland Aves., Nutley N.J., Phone: NU. 2-3119" The 50 page book was edited by Christy Walsh, All America Board Of Baseball (a committee of baseball writers).

Full of accurate, interesting baseball information such as: The Home Run Kingdom (Baseball's 50 greatest sluggers); Baseball Lessons by 9 Famous All-America Players; The King Of Swat (Babe Ruth's Lifetime Record); The Longest Home Runs On Record; "How To Keep Score;" Lou Gehrig's Record-(1925-1938); Ten Leading Base Stealers; Famous Players' Boyhoods; World Series Records; 20 Great Strike-out Pitchers; Vander Meer's Box Score (No hit games-2); 20 Great No-hit, No-run Pitchers; 1939 Baseball Schedules; and The 1938 All-America Team.

The team was selected by Babe Ruth in collaboration with the All-America Board of Baseball, in 1938. This was the seventieth time Ruth was involved in picking the All-America team of the year. Articles written by members of the team include: How to Pitch, by Paul Derringer; Batting Tips, by Joe Medwick; Advice to Rookie Catchers, by Ernest Lombardi; How to Play First Base, by Jimie Foxx; The Keystone Guardian, by Chas. Gehringer; Duties of a Shortstop, by Joe Cronin; Playing the Hot Corner, by "Red" Rolfe; Advice to Outfielders, by Mel Ott; Throwing from Outfield, by Joe DiMaggio.

The back cover has an enrollment application to attend the School Of Baseball, at the 1939 New York World's Fair Academy Of Sports. The Esso Oil Company was a major sponsor of the Worlds Fair and the Academy of Sport,
