The
"1974 Baseball Guide" placemats were produced
by Springprint, a Springfield, Ohio,
based company that specializes in
customized dinning accessories. Placemats such
as these were used by restaurants to
keep their patrons entertained,
educated, and amused while they were
waiting for their meals to be served.
They were meant to be used once and
discarded.
The
full color print, "1974 Baseball
Guide" placemat depicts a batter
waiting for the pitch. This image was
used on a number of other baseball
themed placemats produced by
Springfield. The placemat lists;
"Pennant Winners & World Champions,"
from 1973 down to 1903; "National
League Leaders," Batting Champs, Home
Run Champions, Leading Pitcher (Earned
Run Ave.) 1973 down to 1951; "American
League Leaders," Batting Champs, Home
Run Champions, "Leading Pitcher (Earned
Run Ave.)" 1973 down to 1951; "Last
Seasons Pace Setters," National League
and American League.
At the bottom, below the batter lists
"Most Valuable Player" National and
American League, from 1973 down to
1950. To the right of the player are
pennants representing all 24 of the
National and American League Teams.
The manufacturers credit line at the
bottom right reads: "Springprint
- Lagonda, Springfield, Ohio."
Springprint had been producing
"Baseball Guide" Placemats as early as
1970, and "Baseball Schedule" placemats
since the company was established in
1957. The "Big League Baseball 1963
Schedule" placemat uses the same
"Batter" Image used on the "1974
Baseball Guide" placemat above. (see
below left column)
