As America
approached the end of the 20th century,
the USPS sought a way to honor the wide
variety of events that had taken place.
From 1998 to 2000, the US Post Office
issued the Celebrate The Century series
of postage stamps. Honoring each decade
with collectible 15-stamp panes from
the 1900s through the 1990s. Seven
baseball themed stamps were represented
out of the 150.
On May 28, 1998, the United
States Postal Service issued the
Celebrate The Century: 1920s
commemorative stamp souvenir sheet in
Chicago, Illinois. The second baseball
themed postage stamps appears in this
decade celebrating Babe Ruth. Stamp
Design by Carl Herrman, the "Babe
Ruth" 32˘ postage stamp depicts
the Sultan of Swat, reminiscent of a
picture taken after Ruth hit his 60th
home run in 1927.
The backprint on the stamp reads: "Babe Ruth hit 54 home runs
in 1920. He went on to hit 59 home runs
in 1921, and 60 in 1927. Twice he hit 3
home runs in a single game of a World
Series. One of his nicknames was the
Sultan of Swat.. Celebrate The
Century - 1920s"
The First Day Cover pictured above is
hand painted, signed and numbered by
sports cachet artist Kendal Bevil,

Yankee Stadium Facade, above in the
background. Artist Kendal Bevil, is one
of the most popular cachet makers,
producing first-day covers since 1989.
The First Day Cover pictured below was created by Artcraft, a defunct
cachet maker that operated from 1939 to
2015. The first ArtCraft FDC was
created for the United States 1939 New
York World’s Fair stamp. The last
produced for the 2015 Geometric
Snowflakes set.
